1. "Do your homework, expect and accept that you will have a lot more than you have had in 6th grade in future years. Develop homework habits NOW in order to prepare for your future academic challenges. YOU CAN DO THIS, but you got to start somewhere." Many of the graduating Scituate High School seniors who come to visit told my classes over the years have explained that 6th grade is where their positive homework and study habits started for them.
2. "Study a 'little bit each night' and do not stay up all night, 'cram' or memorize everything the night before a test or a quiz. It does not work and you need your sleep. Just study a little bit each night. YOU CAN DO THIS !"

Homework Answers if Needed...Don't Just copy answers
1. No, the artifacts shown do not match the artifacts of nomadic hunters and gathers who spent most of their time following the movements of herds of animals in order to survive. In particular the loom, the mortar and pestle, clay religious statue as well as the decorated pottery bowl are not artifacts left behind by nomadic hunters and gathers.
2. Yes, the ears of corn would be the obvious reason and evidence that the people who made these artifacts had learned to farm (cultivate) plants.
3. No. There is no actual way to determine if the people who left behind these artifacts were able to acquire these artifacts through trade without knowledge of where they were from in the first place. If these people were not from an area where volcanos were present in their region, the only way they could have obsidian tools was through trade, but again without knowledge of where they are from, you could not determine if these artifacts were acquired through trade.
4. Yes, people did make the tools they needed. All prehistoric and ancient people did make the tools they needed.

Tut's story has changed as fast and as many times as New England whether is prone to during the winter months. King Tut was once thought to have been a murder victim, but now it looks as though he died due to either malaria or an infection caused by the breaking of his leg or maybe a combination of both. Howard Carter has a lot to do with this confusion. He damaged Tut removing him from his sarcophagus. Modern archaeology had to try to figure out whether Tut's injuries were caused in life or by Howard Carter himself. Classical archaeologists such as Carter were not concerned with the advancement of knowledge and the excavation of "kitchen midden." Tut is always making the news and was on the cover of a Smithsonian magazine from 2014. Please see the cover below. Stay tuned...
Ancient HISTORY IN THE NEWS...
Take a look at the cover of my Smithsonian magazine December 2014 edition. This was waiting for me at my house one hour after I wrote this posting. The article pertains to the controversy and debate over King Tut's death. King Tut is still a hot topic. In death he is famous. In life he really was not a big deal. King Tut was so insignificant later pharaohs removed his name everywhere it was found in official histories as well as on monuments. His tomb in the Valley of the Kings was actually covered up with the garbage and the debris from the digging of a later pharaoh's tomb and this might be the reason why his tomb was not plundered until 1922 when Howard Carter found it. Tut was lost to history except for some obscure passages of a "boy king." If you would like to read this article I will make it available.

GEOGRAPHY: THE AEGEAN WORLD
Did Geography Shape Greek History? The Answer is YES
Geography like many of our academic subjects taught in school every day such as math, history, art, gym and technology is a Greek word meaning "to describe or draw the earth." So much of what we do in school is ancient Greek. In our class this year starting from day one back in September we defined geography as follows: Geography is the study of the earth, the influence of the earth on humans and the human influence on it. In all of our studies this year I have worked very hard to teach you time and time again the role geography plays in determining the history and the culture of our ancestors. The geography of Ancient Hellas, a word that means "the land" profoundly influenced the Ancient Greeks as a people, as a culture and without argument influenced their history. Read about it below and remember geography is not just locating a landmark or land form, geography is the attempt to understand how the earth SHAPED a people and their culture. Rough and mountainous geography with limited natural resources forced the Greeks to turn to their own ingenuity and to the sea making a people who were independent minded, indomitable, intense, inventive and innovative. The Greeks did not want to just exist or to merely survive, they wanted to pursue excellence. Arete is a Greek word meaning "personal excellence." Did the geography create a people who needed to pursue personal and cultural excellence and is this reason why the Ancient Greeks accomplished so much and left behind such an incredible legacy? Were the ancient Greek Olympic games the embodiment of the ancient Greek need to excel and go beyond their mere potential? Would they have achieved less if the geography gave them everything they needed without having to work for it? Are we who we are as Americans today because of our geography? Did our American ancestors rely on their geography more than we do today? Rough and tough people come from rough and tough geography. No better example of this simple fact comes from Ancient Greece (Hellas). In future years remember our approach to the study of geography. By the way: The word SCHOOL is also a Greek word. The Greek word is "scholē" which interestingly means a place of leisure and place to hear lectures, a place to pursue philosophy "love of knowledge." A place where you did not have to do physical labor. Leisure and a place to relax. Do we consider school differently?
The geography of Greece is almost the exact opposite of our previous studies of Ancient Egypt and Mesopotamian civilizations. Weather patterns according to your textbook compare Greece to that of Southern California. Hot summers followed up by rainy cool winters. It's mountains isolated the Greek city-states from each other as well as the regions of the Greek mainland such as Attica, Arcadia, Achea, Peloponnese and Thessaly. The advantages of being on a peninsula in the middle of the Mediterranean Sea allowed the Greeks to acquire whatever the geography could not provide through trade and yes, sometimes through war. The economy of Ancient Greece was based on the ability to trade by sea because land routes due to the mountains made land travel difficult. Needing to keep trade simple, they used coins routinely to help speed up the trading process. Egypt, Phoenicia, Israel and Mesopotamian cultures were their trading partners and this made Greece very wealthy. Each Greek city-state (polis) had an acropolis (high city) and an agora or market place where the buying and selling of goods took place. Greek colonies sprang up all around the Aegean Sea particularly on the islands off of eastern Greece and the coastline of modern day Turkey. There were even Greek colonies in southern Italy, Sicily and even modern day southern France. Limited space and the need to keep city-states small required the Greeks to colonize and was an essential aspect of Greek history. Colonies as you have studied in our own American history, do not like staying colonies. Like us, the Greek colonies eventually became independent of their "mother" city-states. The Greek mainland's geographic isolation made for an independent minded people who only survived through their sheer will and determination. No wonder Greece is the birthplace of DEMOCRACY. The soil was rough and rocky and not ideal for the growing of wheat and barley. In order to secure wheat and barley, the colonies were established in areas where open pasture and farmland was available. Olives and grapes however could be grown and the quality of Greek olive oil and wine made them prized trade goods. Greek olive oil is still prized. Sheep and goats could also be raised on the Greek mainland and the Greeks made butter, yogurt and cheese with goat milk. Wool was a prized trade good as well. Believe it or not, clay was also abundant in the geography and the Greeks were expert makers of pottery (red and black figure) exporting their fine ceramics and earthen ware to all trading centers of the ancient world. The Aegean Sea was the super highway during Greek history and not only provided transportation and communication, it had an abundance of fish. The Ancient Greek diet was a healthy one and one that today is described as the "Mediterranean Diet." Did the geography of Ancient Greece (Hellas) influence their history? The answer is a simple, "YES."

20th Annual Research Project Introduced March 22, 2018
Parent update letter sent at the outset of the Research Project & The End of the Ancient Hellas (Greek) Unit
Hello everyone this is Matt Poirier. We are in the process of completing our study of Ancient Hellas which is the real name for Greece. Hellas simply means “The Land.” We always pay attention to the name a people gave themselves, not what name was given to them by their conquerors. Rome conquered Greece by 120 BC and called it “Graiko” and overtime the name stuck. The modern Greeks prefer Hellas and it is even the name they proudly wear on their jerseys at the modern day Olympics. Yes, the Olympics are a direct legacy from Ancient Hellas. There are many amazing legacies this fascinating culture left to our modern world besides the Olympics. Democracy, philosophy and architecture are but a few of the most important. Please talk to your children about what we cover in class. I think you will learn from your children. Please ask them about “ARETE” and what it means?
Our Ancient Greek test is scheduled for Thursday March 29, 2018, but if we need due to the number of snow days we have experienced in the last weeks, I may have to move the test to Monday April 3, 2018. I will let the kids know as soon as I can. This change will be communicated on the class website, twitter page and aspen. Also, the kids should be writing assignments down and any changes of the class direction every day at the outset of class. So please stay tuned.
Also I have sent an attachment that will need to be signed and returned to me for Thursday March 29, 2018. By that same date I will have asked kids to have chosen their topic civilization and whether or not they would like to work with a partner or with two partners from class. Regardless of whether the kids work alone or with a partner(s) they will be expected to complete the same amount of work. I will be giving the kids a hard-copy of this same attachment which covers all of the introductory information for our annual sixth grade research project on Thursday March 22, 2018.
Mrs. Ann Lattinville from the town library will be speaking with the kids from both Team A and Team B during school Thursday March 22 about the role our great Scituate Town Library plays during the course of this research project process. So please read over the attachment and please know that this is a long term project with clear due dates and expectations. I am asking the kids to simply do a little bit at a time and not wait to the last second for any of the steps of the research process. Learning to spread out your work is actually more important than the final grade. Fostering positive habits that will benefit our students throughout their educational experience is the real overall objective of the research project.
We are having a great year and will continue to study ancient history during the course of the steps of the research project. Our final unit of the year is the study of ancient Rome. It is a very exciting study and look forward to teaching it to our students.
Take care, Mr. Poirier

NOTE FROM MR. POIRIER
PLEASE NOTE: The Ancient Egypt Essay will be completed during the abbreviated week of February 4 - 6 and February 9 - 13 as well. The information sheet I sent home today to be reviewed and signed is due back Friday, February 6. It was edited in class detailing all of the changed due dates due to the recent snowstorm. I have also given the students the option of handing this essay's final draft in on Friday, February 13th OR upon their return from February vacation on Monday, February 23rd. This will also help our students whose families will be leaving early for a February vacation getaway. Class-time will be given on a daily basis to write, edit, revise and rewrite the essay's drafts. Although we just finished our unit on Ancient Mesopotamia, I chose to use Ancient Egypt as the basis of our essay because of our students' stronger control of the subject matter. I will be working each day in class, helping the students with this essay as will Mr. O'Sullivan. No other homework will be given in my class besides to complete each step of the writing process on the due dates listed below. The final grade for this essay will be a 3rd term grade, not a second. Aspen will list this grade as 2nd term grade, but will not be corrected in time for it to be a factor on the 2nd term overall grade. I hope this information is helpful.

HISTORY IN THE NEWS...
Take a look at the cover of my Smithsonian magazine December 2014 edition. This was waiting for me at my house one hour after I posted the Thursday night homework about the controversy and debate over his death.
