CLICK ON the Scituate Town Library logo above to go directly to the Scituate Town Library Website and if you would like to go directly to the Finding Resources page of the website just CLICK ON the research photo shown above as well. How easy is that? If you visit our town library Mrs. Ann Lattinville, the head of Children Services at the Scituate library will help you use this amazing technology to not only find resources for the 6th grade Research Project, but to reserve those sources if currently unavailable. Mrs. Lattinville will also explain that the Finding Resources link includes information on the use of data bases and established, reliable websites to make the research process that much more easier for our Jenkins' students. Remember: Research Skills are Life Skills. The annual Gates grade Research Project will allow future projects in junior high school, high school, college and even graduate school to be less formidable because of this experience. Nothing of value is ever achieved without a sense of urgency, enthusiasm and effort. YOU CAN DO THIS! The 6th grade year is about developing positive habits that will assist our students in the future. The research project is meant to be habit forming. Don't wait to the last minute PLEASE. Learn to do just a "little bit" at a time and before you know it, the work will be done.

Do you know that annoying neighbor who thinks they know just about everything? How many times have you said to yourself just how good it would be to set them straight once and for all? Imagine yourself at the next neighborhood cookout stumping them into complete silence with historical knowledge and insights that will leave not just them, but the entire party in awe.
Where & when can you obtain such historical knowledge and insights?...
What was so GREAT about Alexander? What hairstyle did Julius Caesar and the emperor Domitian unfortunately start? Was the Aztec god Quetzacoatl an Irish monk? Were Plato, Socrates and Aristotle wise guys? Do all DARK AGES take place at KNIGHT time? Who won the Battle of ZAMA? What ancient myth teaches you to beware of Greeks baring gifts? Who was the real Scorpion King? Were the Huns actually that bad or were they misunderstood and sensitive warriors out for adventure? What does a tortoise have to do with Roman military formations? Was Cleopatra VII that nice of a lady? What army invented the first “floatie” or floatation device to attack an enemy city? Why were the people from Nimrod really smart? Did an Ancient Mesopotamian Queen invent trousers? Who invented the umbrella? Where does ice cream originate? What does the word civilization and history actually mean?
6th grade students will be presenting their history projects on the ancient civilizations they have been researching since Thursday, March 19th of this year. More than 70 exhibits will be on display with topics ranging from the Mighty Roman War machine, the enigmatic Mayans and Aztecs of Central America, the only human-made monument able to be seen from space – The Great Wall of China and, of course, the awe inspiring pyramid necropolis at Giza of Ancient Egypt’s Old Kingdom, among others.
As you know, this project has been a monumental assignment for both the students, teaching staff, the town library staff and yes, even parents. Please join us to acknowledge and appreciate the students’ efforts. Come and ask questions. Let the students teach you about the legacy their civilizations have passed down to us today. Gain new insights into the ancient world and see just how much our ancestors were and were not like us. And yes, come and acquire the historical acumen necessary to hush that pesky know it all once and for all. How does this sound?
